About

The Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate Club, based in South Delta, British Columbia, was founded in 1981 and has been teaching traditional Shotokan karate for over 40 years. Initially located at the Tsawwassen Junior Secondary gym for 23 years, it now operates out of South Park Elementary. Affiliated with the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and JKA-BC, the non-profit club is led by volunteer black belt instructors, including long-time head instructor Sensei Graham Mallett, a 4th-degree black belt with over 50 years of experience, and Sensei Yasuo Sakurai, a 7th-degree black belt and Chief Instructor for JKA-BC. The club emphasizes fitness, self-defence, and fun in a friendly, family-oriented environment, welcoming students of all ages. It has a strong history of student achievements, with many earning black and brown belts recognized by the JKA, and members regularly participate in tournaments and seminars across British Columbia.

Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that emphasises powerful strikes, precise techniques, and disciplined movement. Rooted in strong stances and explosive attacks, it teaches practitioners how to generate maximum force through efficient body mechanics, making it highly effective for self-defence
